The team was founded in 1898. Aside from achieving fleeting success by winning the NFL Championships in 1925 and 1947, the club has failed to mount any significant momentum. They relocated from Chicago to St. Louis in 1959 with the hopes of finding a change of fortune. Though they were able to keep many of their opponents at bay, the Cardinals found themselves locked out of the playoff for several years.
Don Coryell was hired to lead the team as head coach in 1973. He was able to inspire his players to win their division in 1974 and 1975. But, their position at the top wouldn't last long. By 1977, the Cardinals had lost their momentum and and management watched as several effective players migrated to other clubs. The following decade would prove to be difficult for the franchise and in 1988, after their request for a new stadium was rebuffed by the city, the team relocated to Arizona.
Though the Cardinals' move to Arizona boosted morale and lifted the expectations of the players and fans, they suffered 10 years of notoriety as a consistent poorly performing club. While there were plenty of moments during which the team showed a fighting spirit, they failed to maintain any consistency in their defensive and offensive lines. Finally, their fortunes changed in 1998 and the Cardinals went to the playoffs and dominated their long-standing divisional rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. But, it would be a brief glimmer of hope at the beginning of another long slump as the franchise entered the 2000's.
The University of Phoenix Stadium
After several years of disappointing performances, the Cardinals moved into their new venue, the University of Phoenix Stadium in 2006. The stadium was constructed with a unique design that allows the turf to be moved through an opening on one side to rest on the venue's exterior. This is done to expose the turf to sunlight when it's not being used. So innovative was the design that Business Week proclaimed the stadium as one of the 10 most impressive professional sports venues in the world. To attend one of the Arizona Cardinals' home games, you can usually purchase tickets on the day of the game as they rarely sell out.
