Baltimore Ravens: Hungry And Controversial
The Baltimore Ravens are a relatively new professional football franchise. They're part of the American Football Conference of the NFL and play their home games at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Because the venue was constructed in 1998, it's one of the most modern stadiums used by the NFL. It seats over 71,000 people and has been the home of the Ravens since the moment it opened. Ray Lewis is probably one of the best known Baltimore Ravens players are part of the superbowl winning Ravens team
Baltimore Ravens Born In Controversy
From the beginning, the Baltimore Ravens were a franchise steeped in controversy. In 1995, the owner of the Cleveland Browns (a man named Art Modell) had grown frustrated with the limitations of his team's venue, Cleveland Stadium. He threatened to relocate the Browns to Baltimore. His announcement set off a series of lawsuits. In the end, the franchise was allowed to move but was required to leave behind the name of the team, its colors and the team's history up to the time of the relocation. In effect, the Baltimore Ravens were born from the ashes of the Cleveland Browns, a team which would reemerge a few years later. The Ravens currently play in M&T Bank Stadium
Ravens Logo Spurs Copyright Lawsuit
From the moment of their birth as an expansion team (after they relocated to Baltimore) until 1998, the Ravens used a logo that featured a shield adorned with wings. Unfortunately, the logo wasn't unique. A lawsuit was filed against the franchise by a man named Frederick E. Bouchat. Bouchat, a security guard in Maryland, argued in his lawsuit that he had designed the logo. The Ravens franchise claimed the logo was their own creation. The court, after verifying that Modell could easily access Bouchat's design, ruled that the logo was, in fact, Bouchat's creation and therefore, protected by copyright. The Ravens club immediately began work on a new logo.
