Carolina Panthers: Hunting A Super Bowl Title

Beginning as an expansion team in 1995, the Carolina Panthers were the brainchild of Jerry Richardson, a former player for the Baltimore Colts. Spurred by the NBA's decision to award North Carolina a franchise for that sport, Richardson immediately began pursuing an NFL franchise for the state. The primary concern of the NFL was whether Charlotte (an area designated by Richardson) could actually support a professional football club. He enlisted the help of both Senators and Governors from North and South Carolina to promote the idea to the NFL and the public. In 1993, they were awarded the franchise.

The Panthers management chose Dom Capers to coach the team and began a string of draft picks that was expected to cohesively build the team into a title winning machine. They had an encouraging start, winning the Division championship in 1996. Unfortunately, 1997 signaled the rumblings of off-field problems for the franchise. Rae Carruth, a pick during the 1997 draft was convicted in 1999 of conspiring to have his girlfriend killed. Meanwhile, Kerry Collins, a 1995 quarterback draft began having problems with alcohol. Another casualty was Fred Lane, a running back drafted in 1996. During an argument with his wife, he was shot.

Each of these events took the team's attention away from their game, ultimately spelling disaster for a club that had shown passion and tenacity during their first 2 seasons. Eventually, head coach George Seifert was fired and for a short period of time, the Panthers management had difficulty luring anyone to assume the vacant role. In 2002, John Fox was hired to coach the team and he immediately began looking for draft picks to inject new blood into the franchise. In 2003, on the backs of several newly-drafted young players, the Panthers won their Division championship and proceeded to win their Conference title, earning a spot in the Super Bowl.
