Dallas Cowboys: Breeding Consistent Success
They began in 1960 as an NFL expansion team and went on to become the most successful and highly valued football franchise in the world. While most NFL teams attract local fans, the Dallas Cowboys enjoy a nationwide following. With 5 Super Bowl titles under their belts, the Cowboys have also won 10 Conference titles and nearly 20 Division titles. Several NFL records have been set by the franchise, including the longest string of successive winning seasons (20) in NFL history. These reasons are why Cowboys tix are some of the hardest to get in all of the NFL.
Through The Years
The Cowboys' introduction into the NFL was vehemently opposed by the owner of the Washington Redskins. Having served as the sole NFL representative franchise of the southern states, the Redskins wanted to block the new expansion team. In a savvy flanking move, the Cowboys' owners purchased the rights to the Redskins' song, effectively holding it hostage. This move set the stage for an epic rivalry between the 2 teams.
The Dallas Cowboys have always been consistent performers. From 1966, they've gained a spot in the playoffs 29 times. They've rarely suffered a dearth of effective players. As many of their star players retired or migrated to other teams, the Cowboys were always able to attract other promising players onto the team. However, the franchise suffered from 1985 through 1988 as the team's performance waned. The Cowboys were sold and the new owner (Jerry Jones) fired the long-time, venerable head coach Tom Landry. Jimmy Johnson took his place and picked up a newly-minted UCLA quarterback named Troy Aikman.
The early 1990's favored the Cowboys with a return to their former distinction. By 1993, Aikman led the team into the Super Bowl, demolishing the Buffalo Bills. As personality differences and discipline issues amongst the coaches and players began to take their collective toll, the Cowboys' performance suffered. Despite a few promising seasons during the 2000's the team has yet to return to the Super Bowl. Could this season be the one?
