Reliant Stadium: NFL's First Retractable Roof

Shortly after their first NFL game, the Houston Texans moved into the newly-built Reliant Stadium. While the cost of construction was an astonishing $351 million, much of that sum will be recovered through the 2000 sale of naming rights to the stadium. Reliant Energy agreed to pay $300 million for the rights over 32 years. The stadium seats 71,500 people and boasts the NFL's first retractable roof. If you'd like to experience a Houston Texans game within this state of the art stadium, tickets can be easily purchased to most every game. Oftentimes, Houston Texans tickets are available on the days of the games but for the cheapest seats browse the tickets listed here.

The Houston Texans: A Young Team With Something To Prove

The Houston Texans are the professional football team that nearly wasn't. In 1997, owner Bob McNair was focused primarily on hockey. The NHL eventually rebuffed his proposal to start a pro hockey team in Houston. Fate intervened and within 2 weeks, the Houston Oilers relocated to Tennessee, leaving Houston without a football franchise for the first time in nearly 40 years. McNair abandoned his goal of bringing hockey to Houston and began efforts to start an expansion football team. In November of 1999, McNair was awarded his franchise. Over the next 3 years, players were signed, staff was hired and in 2002, the Houston Texans played their first game as an official NFL franchise.

Building A Name

2002 was a mildly successful season for the Texans. And the following year was similar. The Texans became the first NFL franchise to win both opening games of its first 2 seasons. By the end of the regular season in 2003, they had begun to build a fan base who had high hopes for the new team. Unfortunately, 2004 saw the Texans struggle to hold their own against other franchises. By the end of the season, many fans had turned their backs on the team.

2005 was a dismal year for the Texans. Their record was so spotty that the head coach and his staff was summarily fired. New blood was added under head coach Gary Kubiak. Despite the staff changes, the franchise was barely able to turn in a slightly better record in 2006. The following year began with more promise for the Texans. They won their first 2 games, but were soon demoralized by a series of injuries. While they managed to turn in a record that saved them from last place, the young Texans still have something to prove, and a fan base to continue to build. Savvy shoppers can find some excellent cheap Texans tickets.
