They officially became a professional football franchise in 1953 and have the honor of being the first NFL team to use cheerleaders for support. The Colts are also 1 of the 2 teams to play in the first game to use the overtime rule (in 1958 against the New York Giants). They are one of the most popular NFL teams in the league, so Indianapolis Colts tickets are some of the most sought after tickets of the season. From 1958 through 1969, the Colts had varying degrees of success. While they were able to win the NFL championships in 2 consecutive years (1958 and 1959), they were also defeated by franchises that were considered less effective during the following years. With the merger between the AFL and the NFL in 1970, the Colts were able to quickly dominate the season, eventually winning the first Super Bowl after the historic merger. However, their record turned bleak in the early 1980's and a move out of the city was discussed.
A Stampede From Baltimore
In 1984, the Colts franchise move out of Baltimore to Indianapolis. In their wake, Baltimore rushed to draft legislation to give the city control of the team. Owner Robert Irsay convinced the mayor of Indianapolis to cement the deal before Maryland could pass the legislation. They did so and under the cover of night at 2:00 a.m., a fleet of moving trucks gathered the team's gear and belongings and headed out for Indianapolis. Colts football tickets as we know it today began selling.
The Colts' first 3 seasons in their new home were depressing. During their 3rd season, they teetered on the edge of being the first team since 1976 to play their entire season without a win. With the exception of a few glimmers of hope, the franchise's performance through 1998 was less-than-impressive. Changes were quickly made in the management and player ranks and in 2006, the Indianapolis Colts won their second Super Bowl title. The $675 Million Stadium
Lucas Oil Stadium, with a scheduled opening date of August, 16th 2008 is one of the most expensive stadiums in the NFL. It boasts a retractable roof which can fully open within 9 minutes. While the $675 million cost of construction is stunning, the stadium will be home to a number of tenants. The anticipation for this new stadium is massive and most single game seats for its inaugural season were sold out in advance.
