The Miami Dolphins were first introduced into the American Football League (AFL) as an expansion team in 1966. The Dolphins' Momentous Success
In 1972, the Miami Dolphins became the first NFL team to post a perfect season. The accomplishment was itself astounding. But, their success in winning that season's Super Bowl stunned both fans and spectators. The following season proved the Dolphins' success wasn't a fluke. They won another Super Bowl title, becoming both back-to-back NFL champions and the first franchise to appear in 3 successive Super Bowls (VI, VII and VIII).
Much of the Dolphins' performance is owed to their coach, Don Shula. With a reputation as professional football's most effective and successful coach, Shula directed the Dolphins for 26 seasons. During that time, only 2 seasons were marred by losing records. In 1995, Shula retired and handed the reins to his replacement, Jimmy Johnson. Within 4 years of lackluster performance, Johnson left. Since then, the Dolphins have posted erratic seasons. Their offensive line has been both spectacularly effective and utterly useless. In recent years, the Dolphins have gone through dramatic staffing changes, culminating in the ousting of Cam Cameron (the head coach) and his entire staff in early 2008.
