A Brief History Of The Patriots
The Patriots franchise began with a slow momentum. Despite their start in 1959, it was 1986 before they made their first appearance in the Super Bowl (they eventually lost Super Bowl XX at the hands of the Chicago Bears). After their defeat in 1986, the Patriots would not return to the Super Bowl again until 1997. Unfortunately, their results were no better than their previous attempt. They lost Super Bowl XXXI to the Green Bay Packers.
Their home games are played in Gillette Stadium which can seat up to 68,756 spectators. However, prior to their arrival at Gillette Stadium, the New England Patriots played home games in several other venues including Nickerson Field, Fenway Park, Harvard Stadium and Foxboro Stadium.
Bill Belichick was brought aboard as head coach of the Patriots in 2000, replacing Pete Carroll. The change in coaching style proved effective and Belichick led his team with astonishing success. The Patriots won the Super Bowl championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Under Belichick's guidance, they also posted the fifth undefeated season in NFL history in 2007. They were eventually defeated in Super Bowl XLII in what is regarded as a major upset in NFL history.
