They were originally known as the New York Titans. The year was 1960 and the historic AFL-NFL merger was still a decade away. From the beginning, the team that would later become known as the Jets fought an uphill battle. They posted decent records during the regular seasons. However, they had trouble attracting attendees and selling tickets to their games. In 1962, bankruptcy loomed. Fortunately, the franchise was rescued by a group of investors who were confident the New York Jets could be a profitable franchise and a formidable team and that they would be able to sell New York Jets tickets.

Joe Namath's Leadership
In 1965, the well-regarded Joe Namath arrived as the New York Jets' new quarterback. His arrival proved fortuitous for the team and their performance during the regular season improved. Led by Namath's astonishing throwing accuracy and strategy, the Jets began to dominate other franchises in the AFL. In 1969, their efforts were rewarded by inclusion in what would later be referred to as Super Bowl III. Their opponents were the Baltimore Colts, darlings of the NFL. Though they were considered a long-shot, the Jets trounced the Colts in one of the most impressive upsets in professional football history.
High Expectations Are Disappointed
From 1970 through 1973, Namath was plagued by injuries. His knees had become devastated. The Jets' momentum failed with Namath's knees. During the 1970's, their performance on the field waned. And though 1981 sparked hope within the imaginations of their fans, those hopes were dashed against the Buffalo Bills' defense during a playoff game. They returned to the playoffs in 1991 under the guidance of a new head coach, Bruce Coslet. Though they were defeated, it renewed the expectations of fans. Unfortunately, the ensuing years were marked by erratic performance. Since winning Super Bowl III in 1969, the Jets have yet to win another NFL championship.

The New York Jets moved to Giants Stadium when negotiations with the City of New York to renovate their former venue (Shea Stadium) deteriorated. The Jets are currently having a new stadium built, and you can actually watch the video feed of the New Jets stadium being built!
