Though the extra seats are useful for attracting larger attendances, the addition also had a negative impact. The new sections enclosed the stadium and effectively blocked spectators' view of the Oakland hills (to the chagrin of the fans). They did increase seating capacity by 10k meaning that there are more Oakland Raiders tickets for sale at discounted prices.
Oakland Raiders: A Force To Be Reckoned With
For many, following the Oakland Raiders has become a tradition, with ticket sales reflecting this. The team was founded in 1960 (as part of the American Football League) and joined the NFL when the 2 leagues merged in 1970. Since then, the Raiders have gone to 5 Super Bowls (winning 3 of them) and won 12 division championships. Also, 13 of their members have been inducted into Pro Football's Hall of Fame. But, while the team has enjoyed intense fan loyalty and success throughout the years, there were many periods during which the franchise was embroiled in lawsuits.
In 1980, owner Al Davis joined a legal battle against the NFL, citing antitrust violations. Then, the Raiders sued the NFL for sabotaging the franchise's plans to erect a new stadium in Los Angeles. Years later, the team sued 2 other franchises (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Carolina Panthers) for trademark violations. Fortunately, these cases did not distract the Raiders from performing during the seasons.
A History Of Rivalries
The Oakland Raiders have fostered more rivalries than most NFL franchises. Their oldest rivalry is with the Denver Broncos, dating back to 1960. But, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers also harbor a deep-felt bitterness toward the Raiders. Some rivalries expand beyond professional competition. In 1978, Darryl Stingley, a wide receiver with the New England Patriots was on the receiving end of a brutal hit by a Raiders defensive player. Stingley was paralyzed, setting the stage for one of the most resentful rivalries in the NFL.
Visiting McAfee Coliseum to watch the Oakland Raiders in action is likely to be a memorable experience. Their fan base includes a sect of deeply loyal fans that have a tradition of donning masks. Known as Raider Nation, these fans typically arrive early and can be seen in the surrounding parking lot tailgating before the game. That being said, games rarely sell out, so purchasing Raiders tickets on the day of the game is relatively easy.
