Seattle Seahawks: The Hunt For An NFL Championship
The Seattle Seahawks were founded in 1976 as an NFL expansion team. Despite opening their career on the strength of 2 consecutive victories (against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons, respectively), the Seahawks would be demoralized by 12 straight losses during the remainder of the season. However, 1978 and 1979 would reward the team with successive winning seasons. As a result, the club began to enjoy a growing fan base and media attention. But, the following year would prove dismal.
Into The 1980's And 1990's
The early 1980's were disappointing for the Seahawks. They couldn't manage to post winning seasons and by 1982, head coach Jack Patera was fired (despite being named NFL Coach of the Year in 1978). Chuck Knox was quickly hired to fill Patera's shoes. But, 1984 through 1987 were filled with uneven performances by the team. The Seahawks seemed determined to deliver inconsistent results. After several years of frustration, Knox resigned in 1991 and headed to Los Angeles to coach the Rams.
The next few years were turbulent for the franchise with the club President, Tom Flores, stepping in as head coach upon Knox's departure. 1992 would turn out to be the Seahawk's most disastrous season and in 1996, the team was sold. A few years of uninspiring performances passed and in 1999, Mike Holmgren was recruited as the new head coach. Despite several disappointments along the way, Holmgren was able to direct his team to win the Division Championships in each year between 2004 and 2007. The Seahawks also claimed the Conference title in 2005 and graduated to the Super Bowl for the first time (though they were beaten by the Pittsburgh Steelers). Watching The Seahawks Live
In 2002, the Seattle Seahawks moved into their new home at Qwest Field. It was constructed under the guidance of Seahawks owner, Paul Allen. He worked with the stadium designers to build a roof over the venue that focused the noise from the stands onto the playing field. In a savvy move, Allen also designated a section of metal bleachers to the most boisterous fans, naming it the "Hawks Nest." This section was reserved with the hopes that the metal bleachers would amplify the noise.
