Washington Redskins: Dedicated To Success
Founded in 1932, the Washington Redskins fought an uphill battle for respect in Boston, their hometown. Their uninspiring record during the first few seasons failed to ignite the devotion of fans. Attendance was horrible and by 1936, they had relocated to Washington D.C. The move proved fortuitous and in 1937, the Redskins earned their first NFL championship title. However, by the early 1940's, it was obvious that something wasn't working within the team. Beginning in 1945, the Redskins' performance plummeted and in 22 years, they only managed to squeeze out 3 winning seasons.
In 1969, the Redskins recruited ace head coach Vince Lombardi. Though he guided the franchise to their best season in 14 years, Lombardi succumbed to cancer before the 1970 season. George Allen took the reins and directed the Redskins to the 1972 Super Bowl where they were dispatched by the Miami Dolphins. Despite an impressive 7-year career with the team, Allen was unceremoniously fired when the Redskins failed to make the playoffs in 1977.
1981 brought Joe Gibbs into the fold as head coach. During his tenure, he steered the Redskins to 4 Super Bowls and led them to victory 3 times. In 1997, the franchise was sold to Daniel Snyder who had a knack for generating revenue. As a result, they were able to draw several high-profile players as free agents. Unfortunately, despite reigning as the highest grossing franchise in the NFL, the Redskins have yet to win another Super Bowl title.
Dealing With Controversy
The Washington Redskins' logo features a Native American man wearing long, braided hair and feathers. The image has sparked outrage amongst some in the Native American community. They argue that the logo and the team name reflect traces of racism. In recent years, several activist groups have sought to have the logo and team name changed. Thus far, their efforts have been largely unsuccessful.
