A Brief History Of The Hull City Football Club

Hull City was founded in 1904, but spent most of their history outside the elite top flight. They bounced back and forth between the Football League's Second and Third Divisions. By the 1980s, the Tigers had been relegated to the Fourth Division, English football's lowest tier. Making matters worse, they were on the precipice of bankruptcy.

The club underwent a transformation with a new chairman, new manager, and several promising new players. They secured promotion to the Third Division in 1983 and battled their way into the Second Division three years later. Hull City managed to remain in Division Two for five successive years before being relegated in 1991. Financial problems continued to plague the club and they were forced to release key assets in order to avoid liquidation. Fan support waned and sales of Hull City tickets declined.

At the end of the 2000-01 season, the club was taken over through a boardroom coup. As a result, capital flowed into the team and removed the persistent threat of bankruptcy. Peter Taylor was installed as the new manager and by 2005, Hull City enjoyed back-to-back promotions into the First Division.

Taylor eventually departed and Phil Brown stepped in to assume control. Brown continued to build on the club's momentum and successfully led the Tigers into the top flight for the first time in their history in 2008.
