In 1899, Boro reclaimed its professional status and went on to compete in English football's top flight for 22 consecutive years. Today, they compete in the Barclays Premiership. Middlesbrough's Struggle To The Top

Boro endured a number of successes and setbacks on their way to the Premier League. By 1986, despite a history of excellence, the club was on the verge of financial destitution. They were forced to borrow thousands of pounds in order to pay wages. Making matters worse, they were relegated to the Third Division.

Fortunately, as the result of a few shrewd deals constructed by board member Steve Gibson, Middlesbrough reinvented themselves by entering the Football League in 1986 under a new crest and name. The change was more than just cosmetic. Within 2 years, Boro had earned promotion from the Third Division into Division One. It was a pace they could not maintain and by 1991, as they fell back into the Second Division.

Despite Boro's difficulties, sales of Middlesbrough tickets gained a boost when the club became one of the founding members of the Barclays Premiership. They immediately began to purchase players in an attempt to inject new life into the team. Unfortunately, a poor season performance combined with a punitive Premier League ruling forced the club into relegation in 1997.

Middlesbrough gained promotion back into the top flight the following year and continue to work their way up the table.
