A Brief History Of The Portsmouth Club

Pompey joined the Southern League one year after their birth and eventually rose to the Third Division in 1921. Three years later, they successfully lifted the Championship title and were promoted into the Second Division. By 1927, they fought their way to runner-up status for the Division Two title. They won promotion to the top flight and gradually established a foothold. By the end of the 1938-39 season, Pompey had secured their first FA Cup.

Their performance declined when English football resumed after World War II. Portsmouth was relegated to the Second Division in 1959 and to the Third Division in 1961. Even though they were quickly promoted back to Division Two, financial difficulty was beginning to take a toll on the club. Key players were sold to pay the mounting bills and team leadership was given to Ian St. John, an inexperienced manager. By 1978, Pompey found themselves fighting for survival in the Fourth Division.

Portsmouth's fortunes have changed dramatically over the past three decades. Widely respected manager Harry Redknapp took the reins in 2002 and delivered a First Division Championship title by the end of the following year. What's more, the club's victory led to their promotion into the Premier League. Against the odds, they've maintained their momentum and in 2008, Pompey won their first FA Cup in nearly 70 years.
