Recent Sunderland Football Club History

The last major title that Sunderland lifted was the FA Cup in 1973. At the time, they were playing in the Second Division. It had been four decades since any club outside the elite ranks had secured the trophy and their performance stunned onlookers. In 1975, The Black Cats were promoted to the top flight. Unfortunately, following a miserable season, they were quickly relegated back to the Second Division.

Their descent continued and by 1987, the club had been relegated to the Third Division. It was a new low for The Black Cats and sales of Sunderland tickets reflected their inconsistent performance. In 1995, Peter Reid was hired as manager and he immediately led Sunderland into the Premier League. Unfortunately, their stay would prove to be short; they were relegated at the end of the 1995-96 season.

The last several years have been tumultuous for The Black Cats. They were promoted back to the top flight in 1999 only to be relegated in 2003. They battled their way back in during 2005 and were quickly relegated again. In 2007, Sunderland once again won promotion to the Premier League and brought on Ricky Sbragia as manager to continue their momentum.
