The Wigan Athletic football club (nicknamed "The Latics") was inducted into the Premier League in 2005 after spending much of their history competing in the lower divisions. They were founded in 1932 (late compared to other clubs) and claimed their first FA Cup three years later.

However, it wasn't until 1978 - after 34 rejected applications - that The Latics were finally granted entry into the Football League. While their attendance figures are lower than most Premier League clubs, Wigan Athletic tickets often sell quickly due to their stadium's smaller seating capacity.

Wigan Athletic Football Club: Struggling For Position
During their time in the Football League, The Latics were buffeted between promotion contests and constant danger of relegation. In two seasons during the 1980s, they were able to force their way into fourth place. This gave them a play-off position and an opportunity to win promotion. Unfortunately, they were rebuffed both times. Finally, in 1993, the club fell into 23rd place and was relegated for the first time in their Football League experience. Predictably, sales of Wigan Athletic tickets plummeted.
In 1995, Dave Whelan bought the club and made a public announcement of his intention to win entry into the Premier League. His announcement was met with derision; few people, including loyal fans, believed Wigan Athletic had the talent or temerity. In 2005, Whelan made good on his promise and The Latics were finally absorbed into the top flight.

The club plays home matches at JJB Stadium, a relatively small venue that seats 25,135. Even though their attendance numbers are comparably small, sales of Wigan Athletic tickets have been steadily increasing. For example, average attendance during the 2000-01 season was 6,774. By the 2007-08 season, average attendance had climbed dramatically to 19,046. While the club's induction into the Premier League is partly responsible for the surge in popularity, fan attendance was already growing before 2005.
Available Wigan Athletic tickets are occasionally scarce on match days. For example, in 2008, an attendance record was set when 25,133 fans appeared - two less than the stadium's capacity. If you'd like to enjoy the experience of seeing The Latics play live, order Wigan Athletic tickets as soon as possible. If you wait too long to reserve your seats, they may not be available.
